New Indie Game UPO: Alien Rescue – Introduces A New Game Mechanic

Download Via App Store

I am currently playing an amazing and addictive new game called UPO, from bonsters.co

At first it just looks like a 2D top scroller but NEYY, it is so much more…

This cute little gem is firstly designed with helping the homeless in mind, as every time you play it, you are donating to the happyhousing.org charity, something that I feel is a wonderful touch to a super game.

So let’s get to the game itself, here are the instructions:

Tap a destination planet;

Dodge asteroids;

Pick aliens from planets;

Catch power-up aliens on the fly;

Every saved alien = +1;

Every alien left behind = -1;

Game ends when you damage your UFO;

So, as explained above you are a little UFO ship and you have to save all of the cute little aliens from the passing planets by tapping them as you fly through space at break neck speeds, sending you flying towards the planet but watch out for the deadly asteroids!

I love the graphics and the cute, bouncy gameplay is just so much fun, you have to play it to see what I mean. The balance between the asteroids and the speed they travel is just right, so as you tap each planet you have to time it just right so they don’t knock you off your trajectory and spinning off to the side, ending your turn in a smooth transition to the home planet.

So far I’ve only managed 19 in one turn, there is a part where you get loads of aliens all clustered together and you have to bounce from planet to planet just right as you have to collect them from just floating in space and not on any planet so that is a lot harder with asteroids blocking your path.  There’s also floating power ups that destroy asteroids if you can catch them.

The asteroids can also hit you whilst stationary on a planet so you have to keep an eye out for them hitting you before your next move.

UPO is one of my favourite new games, I think Bonsters have hit the right note with this one, all of the mechanics and animations are smooth, you really get the feel of gravity and trajectories, especially when you get hit, the physics are ala Angry Birds Space.

This beautiful game is FREE plus you will be helping the homeless, so please go and download it today, you have Google, Apple and Facebook so you have choice.  Oh and the strangest coincidence happened, the publishers are called Rikkir inc and my name is Rikki R-B – it’s in the tea leaves as my Nan would say.

DYSTORIA Review: A ‘Descent’ Into Greatness

Way back in 1995, (before XBOX ) and when almost every game was an Indie Game, I played a 3D PC game that changed my gaming life forever…

The game was called “Descent”, it was a doom like space shooter with you as an oversized “Batteries Not Included” like space ship that had you whizzing and bumping around a maze like environment, shooting your enemies and reaching the goal, raising and lowering your ship’s gravity to avoid lasers.  It had a killer network LAN mode and was way before it’s time.  In terms of gameplay, mechanics, longevity you name it, this game had it all (plus it ran from a floppy disk on DoS).

So this brings me to a newly released game on STEAM that I have been playing over the past few days, it’s called DYSTORIA and it is flaming fantastic!

DYSTORIA by Tri-Coastal Games is a futuristic, action filled, gorgeous indie game title.  It has you starting off in a very familiar setting from “The Last Starfighter” playing an arcade machine stuck in the middle of nowhere, this scene just ignites a warm feeling for all us older lot who actually remembers the mid 80’s, a great start.

SPOILER ALERT: Suddenly you are abducted by aliens (who clearly have issues with your late night gaming habit) and you are beamed up to the mothership to stand a series of tests in one of their smaller space ships.  These are not any old tests though, but ones that all of humankind and its existence are dependant on, so in other words you have to save planet earth by proving we are not the weakest link in the universe goodbye!

DYSTORIA focuses on gameplay, excitement, action and feeling.  It offers unique game mechanics like the ability to ‘crawl’ along all sides of the level so if you don’t feel like flying, then you can choose to glide along the walls, floor & ceiling.  This adds a great aspect to the gameplay and allows you to be sneaky and tactical.

You can only shoot in the direction you are facing so you need to be alert at all times.  You shoot lasers, throw bombs and destroy massive parts of the level in order to progress, which is highly satisfying watching the massive explosions chain off after you shoot the massive silo enough times.  This is possibly repeated a little too much throughout the game, but it is still fun to do regardless.

The controls are slick and it feels like you are really floating, especially when just hovering stationary.  The enemies’ AI can be slightly predictable but they do not let you have it easy by any means, just because you see someone shooting a gun at you, doesn’t mean you can get out of the way!

The enemy can come from anywhere so you have to be on your toes but there is a good balance of win/lose ratio, you hardly ever feel that you are going to breeze through a level without a fight but sometimes you can die without knowing who killed you.  In some levels you have to defeat all enemies so no hiding in the corner and sneaking to the end portal.

You have to collect three orbs hidden within each level which then opens up the end portal, you can also upgrade your ship to a more advanced ship as you progress.

All ships in the game seem to have different handling which is a nice touch.  You do have a shield apparently, but the aliens will see to it that you don’t have it for long.

The sound is an excellent electro 80’s synth mashup and really adds to the game’s feel, it reminds me of Air Wolf’s opening theme tune and many a 80’s TV show incidental music which is always a good thing to me.

DYSTORIA has all of the components to be an absolute classic.  It has depth, elegance, great story and a brilliant look.  The gameplay, graphics and mechanics are smooth, although it can get repetitive sometimes, there are many times it draws you back in to have another go, this symbolises a good difficulty balance and plays on our (sometimes) infernal human instincts.

With 30+ open levels and a nasty end level boss there is enough to get your teeth into, I recon this would be amazing in VR, but Tri-Costal have said that only a PC STEAM version is available so that will limit your VR options at present.

DYSTORIA features moving platforms, switches for doors, triggers that change level geometry, deadly moving lasers to avoid, destructible blocks to blow up (often revealing hidden areas of valuable pickups) and much, much more.

Styx: Shards of Darkness – Devlog By Cyanide – The Making of a Goblin

Cyanide Studio, designers of Styx: Shards of Darkness, today divulge how they imagined and gave life, identity and soul to the fundamental lead of their game, the witty troll like goblin named Styx.

Shards of Darkness removes our agile hoodlum from the shadows of Akenash and into a greater world with more abilities, a more noteworthy bestiary, and more many-sided, vertical level plan. Shards of Darkness advantages from a bigger creation and better acknowledgment, with a story supplemented by cutscenes in which Styx communicates his trademark mind and snark – get a sneak look at his mocking, fourth divider softening funniness up this video!

You may realize why Styx is not the sort of character you’re accustomed to playing, and how his smart side can exceed his flaws.  As a troll, a head on encounter is the best and most ideal approach to kick the bucket, so you’ll need to concentrate your skills to find the best approach to conquer your dastardly foes.

Find out how this “monstrous minimal green character” adjusts to your playstyle, as “you can be the person that goes in and out through the level getting each thing, or the slippery one who never raises any alert.” Take preferred standpoint of Styx’s aerobatic ability and pour down from above, or utilize your apparatuses and capacities to absolutely maintain a strategic distance from recognition – it’s totally up to you.

Regardless of how you play, he’ll be there for the whole voyage, condemning the player, as well as his makers as well!

Gamesir G3s: Design

Most of the Gamesir controllers have a really nice black finish to them so they will always fit into your gaming peripheral collection just fine.

The Gamesir G3s has a remarkable similarity to the PS4’s controller. It has the same outline shape, of course because of this it has an extremely comfortable feel and a sturdy grip.  Even though it is very sturdy, the Gamesir G3s is incredibly light, without feeling cheap, this is a great start!

The Gamesir G3s throws in a full arsenal of controls, including the infamous D-pad, two thumbsticks, ABYX buttons, four L/R shoulder buttons, turbo & clear , start and select so perfect for all of your SNES and MegaDrive emulation sessions.

The ABYX buttons are indeed illuminated so they really look the part once the power is on, it looks like a gamepad spaceship, ready to go on all kindsa gaming adventures.

If you have the enhanced version, then you really get a great deal as it includes the phone holder clasp that screws onto the controller in a hot minute and holds quite firmly so you can put your phone on top of the controller by using the spring-loaded flaps and adjustable spring top and fits 99% of smartphones into it quite nicely.  This gives great flexibility and allows you to play your fave mobile games  on the go, if you have no shame of course ;0)

Gamesir G3s: Using It

The Gamesir has every platform in mind, you can connect to virtually any device, I have used it on Windows and Linux, you can use it with iOS, Android, Smart TV’s, Apple Mac and even your PS3!

You can sync by Bluetooth or the 2.4Ghz USB dongle or even the USB cables provided, which also charges the Gamesir G3s as well as connecting the device, how very convenient.

The air syncing varies depending on the device but the concept is always the same, hold down a button while powering on to activate the discovery mode, then select it from your Bluetooth menu on your device.

iOS is restricted to iCade and very few others so you’ll have to wait until Apple lift it’s restrictions, this is one little drawback for me.

On Desktop games, if you play FPS or any mouse related games, they have included a clever mouse mode by holding down X and Select, you can control the mouse using the left stick, pretty nifty!

I played Super Mario and Sonic via an emulator on Linux to really test out if I still get that same feel as I did with a retro controller.  Of course I was not disappointed, after easy button mapping on me ZSNES, I easily played 5 hours without realising. In fact I’ve not stopped playing it daily since I started this review last month and am now an expert in SMB (again).

Response times in game are amazing. Bluetooth or 2.4GHz remote gives some great response times in relation to on screen gameplay, as if you had it plugged into a USB port.

The battery life is brilliant, not once did I run out of juice. Gamesir says that you can squeeze 18 hours of gameplay from one charge and I can’t fault that statement.  They even have a power save mode that turns off the controller after 5-10 mins of inactivity.

Should I Get One?

The answer, simply is YES.

Gamesir has done everything that you could ask of them, to allow you to connect to everything, you can use it on your mobile on the train, connect to your SMART TV, use it on your PS3 and even play your most intense AAA title on your desktop PC, MAC or LINUX gaming machine.

Go grab one right now, it’ll be the best third party/ indipendent controller you have ever bought.

Getting One

The Gamesir G3s can be purchased on GearBeast.Com

The lovely people at Gamesir are great people and respond to emails and questions very quickly so hit them up on Twitter or their website http://gamesir.hk/

I hope you enjoyed my little review of the Gamesir G3s Enhanced Edition, until next time.
